All Aboard for Learning: Don’s Classes Takes the Train to Ashland

Don’s morning and afternoon classes recently embarked on an exciting adventure: a train ride to Ashland, VA! For many of the students, this was their very first time traveling by train, and the experience sparked interest in exploring other destinations like Fredericksburg, Alexandria, and Washington, D.C. The energy and curiosity were high as students watched the scenery pass by, taking in the experience together.

In preparation for the trip, students reviewed the cafe menu and calculated the total cost of a sandwich, drink, tax, and tip. This was a practical way to apply math and reading skills while planning for their own meal choices.

Once in Ashland, the group explored the charming downtown area and made a special stop at Homemades by Suzanne. Students ordered lunch and were also treated to complimentary drinks and cookies, generously provided by the restaurant. The classes also visited Randolph-Macon College, where they walked the beautiful campus and learned more about the local community.

Back in the classroom, students explored the Amtrak website to practice reading comprehension, digital skills, and trip planning.

What started as a simple train ride became a meaningful, hands-on learning experience that blended literacy, math, technology, and cultural exploration — with plenty of fun along the way.
