Our Programs
Learning to read as an adult is complex, and our students have often had limited success in school. READ meets students where they are and helps them attain their literacy and life goals. READ RVA provides classroom instruction, one-to-one tutoring, and community programs to adults who want to improve their reading, writing, basic math and digital skills.
Our students guide our programs. They are creative, resourceful, determined, brave and humble. They learn by experience with content that must be relevant. The material they read is applicable to real life situations. They are treated with respect, and our team understands barriers the students may be facing.
We utilize the Wilson Language System as our core curriculum which is rooted in the science of reading. Our curriculum includes phonics, comprehension, vocabulary and fluency for adults reading below an 8th grade equivalency.
Our reading programs include:
Adult Basic Education (ABE) literacy classes taught by our teachers with tutor support
One-to-one tutoring by our trained literacy tutors
Community literacy workshops
Enrolled students may also participate in a computer lab, tutor time help, and a student-led book club
Book Club
Formed by students in the summer of 2024, READ Out Loud is our student-led book club that meets once a week on Fridays for an hour to read and discuss that session’s book!
